Autosport May 3, '84, p25 photo HPU 74Y & photo KEV100Y The British Junior Rally team had a rather lean time on last weekend's Costa Smeralda Rally, a coefficient four round of the European Championship. Of the three crews, only Louise Aitken and Ellen Morgan finished the rally, bringing their RS1600i home in 12th place and fourth in Group A.
A blown engine put Andrew Wood's Talbot Samba out of the running during the first leg of the Sardinian event and Mark Lovell's RS1600i followed soon afterwards when a drive shaft broke on the extremely twisty 14th test.
"It was a remarkably fast event," commented Lovell on his return. "We had seeding problems that saw us catch several crews on stages - we passed four in 11Kms on one stage - but it was just bad luck that we retired where we did."
Autosport May 3, '84 p63 The competition was equally brutal in Group A.., leaving Noberasco to take the lead in his Fiat Ritmo 130, closely followed by the leading Briton, Mark Lovell who was really flying in his Escort RSi despite his start number of 58. Andrew Wood suffered engine failure, Lovell going out two stages later with drive-shaft failure. Louise Aitken was left as the only survivor in her Escort. On Friday, Louise all but tore a front wheel off after hitting a rock but still held on to 12th spot.
